Skilled stone pitchers for R555 improvement

Proper stone pitching is an important component of road construction. This is considering the part it plays in spreading water flows; stabilising slopes; and enhancing drainage. Therefore, it needs to be undertaken with the same rigour as that of other components of a typical road construction, upgrade or maintenance project.

Quality stone pitching can be witnessed along the 19km section of the R555 between Steynsdrift and Steelpoort that is being improved by Edwin Construction on behalf of the South African National Roads Agency Limited. This high standard of workmanship was undertaken by Tjeka-trained employees.

The 10 individuals were recruited from a nearby community to work alongside Edwin Construction’s teams on this project after completing a two-day Tjeka stone-pitching course.

It covered the use and maintenance of relevant hand tools, as well as small equipment and plant. The individuals also learnt how to select suitable stone and pile, pack, grout and clean the material, in addition to appropriate surface compaction, levelling and moistening techniques.

“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.”
