Mining community learns construction skills from the best
Learners from a community in Steelpoort, Limpopo, recently had the opportunity to learn from very experienced artisans while completing training in basic bricklaying and plumbing facilitated by Tjeka.
The training was provided on behalf of a large mining company in the area. It is part of the mine’s commitment to uplifting communities located within its operational footprint and areas from where it sources labour. These commitments are enshrined in the mine’s Social Labour Plan.
This certified training is the first important step taken by the learners towards becoming qualified artisans.
Importantly, the training provided by Tjeka will help address skills shortages that are contributing to high unemployment levels in the community. The learners have acquired basic skills that they need to secure employment and start their own businesses.
Learners gained important practical experience while helping to repair various facilities in the area as part of the ancillary works associated with the extension of the N1 Highway.
We once again had a very high success rate on this project. All the learners were enthusiastic and motivated to achieve. This, combined with our hands-on approach to training, ensured a very positive outcome.
“Artisan development is key to improving our economy and creating employment for youth. The mining sector, within which artisanship is a core skill, realises this importance and has, over the years, trained a large number of artisans to meet ever-growing demand.”
