NHBRC and Tjeka transfer foundational bricklaying skills

The National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) selected Tjeka Training Matters as its training partner to impart bricklaying skills to 37 selected individuals.

These individuals learnt all the skills that they need to make it as successful “brickies” in the homebuilding industry where there is a dire shortage of these artisans. This compromises the quality of housing in the country.

Having completed a three-month CETA-registered skills programme in bricklaying, they know how to use and maintain masonry tools, equipment and protective equipment and how to apply masonry materials. Furthermore, they learnt how to perform different types of jointing, as well as masonry anchor installation techniques. They also studied basic techniques to lay and cut around solid masonry units. Tjeka also showed these individuals how to install lintels and clean visible masonry wall surfaces.

There’s more to bricklaying than “stacking bricks”. Professional “brickies” can read plans; use specialised tools; and understand how to use the many different types of masonry materials. They also need to be physically fit and able to take a practical approach to overcome challenges. These are all skills that these individuals will be able to develop, hone and refine once they start working in the field.

“The important thing is to take the bricklayer and make him understand that he’s building a home, not just laying bricks.”
