Bricklayer NQF4

Our NQF4 Bricklayer occupational skills programme (SAQA) teaches the skills that are needed to be a competent bricklayer. Notably, there is dire shortage of these tradespeople. It is an occupation that requires an ability to follow building design plans precisely through measuring. This while in strict accordance with architects’ plans and local government regulations. It is equally important to execute those plans with high quality professional bricklaying skills.

To register for this qualification, individuals must hold a NQF3 qualification.

It can also be attained via recognition-of-prior learning. Tjeka will apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning.

NQF4 Bricklayer competencies

Holders of a Tjeka NQF4 Bricklayer qualification possess the following competencies:

An understanding of health, safety, quality and legislation
An understanding of the environment, energy efficiency and ethics
An understanding of tools, equipment, materials and workshop practice
An understanding of drawings and applied sciences
An understanding of industry contexts
An understanding of communication theory
An understanding of bricklaying, blockwork, masonry and paving theory

NQF4 bricklaying practical skills

This knowledge is complemented by NQF4 Bricklaying practical skills, including:

An ability to conduct preparatory activities, repair and/or alterations to structures. This is done with face and plaster bricks; natural and pre-cut stone; and block.
An ability to lay different types of bricks and blocks using mortar to build superstructures and decorative structures
An ability to lay different types of stone and pre-cut stone using mortar to build superstructures and decorative structures
An ability to lay paving and other structures
An ability to conduct finishing operations
An ability to undertake quality testing and assurance activities
An ability to conduct good “housekeeping” and waste-removal operations
