Bricklayers’ assistant NQF2
Holders a of a NQF2 bricklayer’s assistant occupational qualification possess the knowledge necessary to support high-performance bricklaying teams.
A bricklayer’s assistant transports materials from laydown areas; mixes mortar; carries bricks; and lays out brickwork. This is in addition to a host of other duties, such as cutting and shaping bricks; checking the alignment of bricks; and cleaning the work area. However, this role is more than just manual dexterity and physical strength. It also requires excellent problem-solving skills. A bricklayer’s assistant must also abide by health and safety regulations.
This is an open access skills programme. Meanwhile, learners can also access the skills programme through the recognition-of-prior learning (RPL) process. The RPL process is undertaken by Tjeka according to qctos_-rpl-policy25june2014.pdf. Individuals who have acquired competencies in the skills programme will be credited for such topics via the process.
NQF2 bricklayers assistant skills
Holders of a NQF2 bricklayer’s assistant occupational qualification possess the following skills:
- An ability to read and interpret drawings and transfer levels under supervision
- An ability to follow instructions and use provided physical quantity estimates and calculations to prepare a worksite. This is performed with specific tools; equipment; materials; and support structures.
- An ability to use mortar and lay various brick types. This is to build superstructures and decorative structures, as well as perform finishing operations under supervision.
- An ability to deliver and/or support appropriate housekeeping, as well as dismantling and removal services or activities
