Our NQF4 Carpenter occupational skills programme addresses a serious shortage of qualified carpenters needed by the building industry.

Holders of a NQF Carpentry qualification (SAQA) are invaluable members of your team. As experts, they leverage their knowledge of traditional craftmanship and many new innovative techniques.

Notably, carpenters are also at the forefront of using eco-friendly materials and construction methods. They, thus, play a key role in promoting environmentally conscious building practices. This is a trend that will continue to gain momentum in South Africa and place a premium on these skills.

To register for this qualification, individuals must hold a NQF3 qualification.

It can also be accessed via recognition-of-prior learning. Tjeka will apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning.

NQF4 Carpentry competencies

Holders of a NQF4 Carpentry qualification denotes the following competencies:

• An understanding of health, safety, quality and legislation
• An understanding of the environment, energy efficiency and ethics
• An understanding of tools, equipment, materials and workshop practice
• An understanding of drawings and applied sciences
• An understanding of industry contexts
• An understanding of communication theory
• An understanding of carpentry formwork and cutting
• An understanding of shoring trenches or excavations
• An understanding of roofing
• An understanding of partitioning or ceilings
• An understanding of carpentry finishing

NQF4 Carpentry practical skills

This knowledge is complemented by NQF3 Carpentry practical skills, such as:

• Setting out work areas
• Cutting materials according to specifications using hand-held power tools
• Installing structures
• Fabricating, erecting and stripping steel and timber formwork
• Preparing and erecting ceilings, roof trusses, partitions and panelling
• Cladding roof structures
• Finishing activities
